- How did you and your team work together to achieve the “Outstanding” rating in such a short time?
A great deal of preparation and practice went into this achievement. Reaching an “Outstanding” rating in such a short time was the result of strong teamwork, clear communication, and a shared commitment to excellence. From the beginning, we focused on setting clear, measurable goals and made sure everyone understood their role in achieving them. Regular meetings were held to discuss progress, exchange ideas, and address any challenges, ensuring alignment and support across the team. With practice, we improved, and in the end, all the hard work paid off with outstanding results.
- You mentioned you are currently completing your early years teaching and learning degree at Kingston University. What inspired you to pursue additional qualifications while working full-time?
The short answer is N! I earned my Level 5 qualification during the pandemic while working in my previous setting, which was very different from N. After joining N, learning about the company’s values inspired me to pursue my degree, driven by my passion for early childhood education and my desire to deepen my understanding of child development. I believe that gaining additional qualifications will help me become even more effective in my role. The more I learn, the better I can support children’s learning, well-being, and overall growth, contributing to a positive and nurturing environment for them. Ultimately, pursuing this degree is both a personal and professional goal—it’s about continuously improving my skills to make a meaningful impact on the children I work with and the team I’m part of.
- How is the deputy manager succession pathway shaping your career path?
The Deputy Manager Succession Pathway has been an invaluable part of my career development. It provides a clear and structured roadmap for progression, giving me the opportunity to build on my existing skills while also developing new leadership competencies. Through targeted training and mentoring, I’ve gained deeper insights into team management, strategic decision-making, and operational efficiency. The pathway also encourages me to take on more responsibility, which has helped me build confidence in my abilities and leadership potential. It is not only preparing me for the next step in my career but also encouraging a mindset of growth, continuous learning, and proactive leadership.
- What responsibilities do you have as the N rep and mental health first aider, and how do they support your role?
As a N rep, I work as a link between the team and senior management, addressing concerns and issues as they arise. I gather feedback from the team, share ideas with management, and work collaboratively to find solutions. My role also involves promoting a positive work culture and creating a supportive environment where everyone feels heard and valued.
As a trained mental health first aider, I provide initial support to colleagues facing mental health challenges. This includes offering a safe, confidential space to talk, recognising signs of stress or mental health issues, and directing them to the right support. I also raise awareness about mental well-being, ensuring that our team is supported and has the resources they need to stay well.
Together, these roles help me promote an open and transparent atmosphere to support the emotional and practical needs of the team in a balanced way.
- What has been the most rewarding part of your journey with N so far?
The most rewarding part of my journey with N so far has been the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally within such a supportive and dynamic environment. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside a talented team and leaders who are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of the children we support. Watching the children grow and develop, and knowing that I’ve contributed to their foundation for future success, is incredibly fulfilling. One of the highlights has been the chance to take on new challenges and responsibilities, which has allowed me to expand my skill set and contribute meaningfully to the success of our team.
- What advice would you give to someone starting as an unqualified nursery assistant and aiming for a leadership role like yours?
Always set a goal for yourself with an achievable time frame. My top Clifton Strength is ‘Achiever,’ which is why setting goals and getting things done is so important to me. I believe this is key for anyone aspiring to be a leader. I also encourage having honest conversations with your line manager. At N, we offer extensive management training—for room managers, deputy managers, and the management succession pathway—to support your career growth and help you achieve your goals.
